Fire District 2

History - Fire District 2 and The Board of Fire Commissioners

Prior to 1980, the funds necessary for the operation of the various fire companies in East Brunswick, were obtained from a contribution from the township and an annual fund drive with contributions received from residents and commercial properties.  It became increasingly more apparent that the lack of financial support from many of those contacted, resulted in inadequate funds to meet the increasing cost of providing adequate fire protection.  Consequently, fire districts were established which now provide for funds to be raised through a fire tax levied against all property owners.  The Old Bridge Volunteer Fire Department became East Brunswick Fire District 1 in October 1980, followed a month later by the East Brunswick Independent Fire Company whose response area became East Brunswick Fire District 2.  The Brookview Volunteer Fire Company followed in 1982 and became East Brunswick Fire District 3.

For EBIFC, it started on October 20, 1980 when a petition for the creation of Fire District No. 2 within the Township of East Brunswick was presented to the Township Council in accordance with New Jersey statute.  The first reading of the ordinance establishing the District was read on October 27, 1980.  Upon adoption of the ordinance and the required ten day waiting period, the creation of Fire District 2 was formally recognized as an entity.  The first election was held on December 1, 1980 wherein the following individuals were elected as commissioners:

William C. Peck

John P. Alberts

Howard Levine

Robert G. Morrison

Willard L. Stockton

These individuals were also long serving members of the East Brunswick Independent Fire Company, which they now served as the Board of Fire Commissioners.  There were a total of eight people running for the position but with the support of the Fire Company the above easily won the positions.  The first meeting of District 2 was held on December 23, 1980.  The advent of the Fire District, the funds needed to provide fire protection, including the purchase of apparatus and equipment were now obtained through a fire tax assessed to each property owner in the District.

In 1998, the Board of Fire Commissioners requested and received control of the Bureau of Fire Prevention which had formally been a department with the Township.  The Bureau presently consists of a Fire Marshall, seven Fire Inspectors and two administrative assistants.  The Board is proud of the fact that the Bureau is self sustaining and does not impact the tax base for fire suppression.

Bureau of Fire Prevention

Mission Statement:

The mission of this Bureau is to prescribe and enforce minimum requirements and controls to safeguard life, property and the public welfare from hazards of fire and explosion arising from the storage, handling or use of substances, materials or devices in the use or occupancy of building, structures, sheds, tents, lots or premises.  The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for enforcement of the Fire Prevention Code, inspection of buildings and structures for fire hazards and protective equipment, investigation of the causes, origin and circumstances of all fires in the District, and for fire safety education.

What is Fire Prevention?

The primary goal of the Fire Marshal's Office is to prevent fires by assuring that all publicly occupied structures are maintained in accordance with nationally recognized fire safety standards. The Fire Prevention Bureau was established in 1999, to promote fire safety for the residents of Fire Districts 2 & 3, Township of East Brunswick.  Due to the high increase loss of life, during the 1970’s, and 1980’s, the State of New Jersey adopted The Uniform Fire Codes of New Jersey. These codes help business and homeowners create a safer working and living condition.

Currently, the Fire Prevention Bureau consists of seven inspectors. The Fire Marshal oversees all inspections of commercial establishments, businesses and multiple dwelling residences within Districts 2 & 3.   The Fire Marshal also assists local businesses in the town set up and operate within the guidelines of the New Jersey State Uniform Fire Code.  All personnel are fully certified in accordance with New Jersey State requirements and are current or former fire fighters.

An important function of the Fire Marshal’s Office is to respond and investigate all reported fires or explosions occurring within Fire District 2 & 3.   As trained fire investigators, the Fire Marshal’s Office determines the origin and cause of the fire.

During 2004 the Bureau conducted 3,603 inspections / re-inspections, 506 smoke detector / CO inspections for residents selling their homes, and 18 fire investigations as well as numerous other activities related to fire safety.

On a daily basis the Bureau works closely with the Township’s Code Enforcement and Construction Department Personnel as well as interfacing with fire fighting personnel of the East Brunswick Independent Fire Company, who provide fire protection services to the District.
