At 16:47 on July 10, 2008, the East Brunswick Independent Fire Company was dispatched to what sounded as a routine fire call. That call turned out to be anything but.
That alarm was soon confirmed to be a working structure fire which evolved to a three alarm fire. Following an initial aggressive interior attack by members of EBIFC, and assisted by East Brunswick Fire Districts 1 (OBVFD) and 3 (BVFC), the firefighters on the scene brought the fire under control, effecting a great stop, saving the structure. Assisting EBIFC, besides EBFD 1 and EBFD 3, were fire units from South River, North Brunswick, New Brunswick, Milltown and Monroe FD 3. Medical assistance was provided by East Brunswick Rescue Squad, Milltown Rescue Squad, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Transmed Ambulance Transport Inc.
Although, as stated, firefighters on the scene effected a great stop and a save, the structure suffered a great deal of water and smoke damage. After an exhaustive investigation by agents of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, New Jersey State Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, East Brunswick Police Department and East Brunswick Fire District 2 Fire Marshal office, “Based on the physical evidence recovered at the scene, as well as information developed through numerous interviews, the fire was determined to be suspicious in nature.” As of February 2009, “East Brunswick Police are continuing to work on identifying those responsible for the fire, which rendered the Innes Road school uninhabitable at least for the current school year”.
